Creo vs Pro E – The History of Pro Engineer
Pro/ENGINEER (Pro/E), the software that would one day become PTC Creo, was launched back in 1988 and was the first to market with parametric, associative feature-based, solid modeling software, quickly becoming one of the most popular 3D modeling software suites for engineers.
When Did Pro E Become Creo?
PTC’s acquisition of Co-Create in 2007 was a game changer. With the power of direct modeling, PTC decided to integrate it with their existing Pro/ENGINEER (Pro/E) parametric functionality. In 2010, they unveiled PTC Creo—an all-new revolutionary product offering customers cutting-edge 2D/3D design capabilities with direct and parametric features at arm’s reach.
More Than Just a Name Change!
Since its inception in 2010, Creo, formerly known as Pro/E, has experienced remarkable growth. It has evolved into a comprehensive suite of tools, encompassing integrated 3D CAD to CAM and CAE software. Over the past decade, it has undergone ten significant updates, culminating in the latest version, Creo 10, introduced in May 2023.
Creo offers five cost-effective packages, giving you more capabilities out of the box with every seat:
Product Mapping
If you’re a long-time engineer using Pro/E for years, the transition to Creo probably felt like being thrown into the deep end of a pool. While the concepts and underlying principles are similar, the product names and terminology have changed, but not the tools associated with Creo. No need to worry, though—let’s look at some of the name changes between modules from Pro/E to Creo in context:

Creo vs Pro E – Which is Better?
Fundamentally, there is no difference between Pro E and Creo. However, Creo is superior if you want to stay ahead of the competition. Its vast suite of features, like comprehensive simulation, topology optimization, and AR, make it an ideal choice for high-performing designs. Additionally, given the subscription licensing changes, you can’t purchase Pro E anymore.
Creo vs Pro E – The Path To Creo
Creo is a powerful design software suite that brings the legacy and innovation of Pro/ENGINEER, CoCreate, and ProductView to life. Companies utilizing this technology unlock their full creative potential, and product designers gain newfound productivity with enhanced data-sharing capabilities.
Creo also helps reduce unforeseen service or manufacturing issues so organizations can focus on what matters – making great products!
